Covering just 95 hectares (or 235 acres in old money), White Horse Hill has a rich past. Was this the place that Saint George slew the Dragon and where King Alfred rallied his troops? What is for certain is that for over 3,000 years this prominent landmark has played a pivotal role in the lives of the people residing in the Vale of the White Horse.
A festival took place every seven years on the hill and it is believed up to 30,000 people attended the 'Pastime' event to scour or clean the horse. The activities associated with these events were truly unique and unlikely to meet todays Health and Safety requirements.......
