Shaped by coal audio trail

Our coal mining legacy is at the heart of this 5-mile audio trail in the Amber Valley of Derbyshire. You start the walk from Alfreton Leisure Centre, built in the grounds of Alfreton Hall - home to the Palmer-Morewoods who built their wealth from the subterranean industry - and weave your way through a variety of important wildlife habitats.

Along the way you will hear many fascinating tales, including those of young love and sibling rivalry, and discover that this area was literally 'shaped by coal'.

Download the full audio trail (in a zipped folder) or scroll down for each individual file.

If you can access the internet on your mobile phone why not take the walk and listen to each track while you are there, by selecting the relevant audio file below*.

The route, which will take a minimum of 3 hours, is along mainly level, but at times uneven paths. There are short sections with steps. Busy roads need to be crossed and an Ordnance Survey map of the area is advised.

The lesiure centre sells refreshments and you will pass a pub - the Anchor Inn - after stop 15, but its opening hours are limited so a packed lunch and plenty of drink are advised.
